The past and the future exist only in our minds. What a backpack we carry! It’s such a pervasive habit, that we don’t even realize we’re doing it. Where is the moment life is actually happening to us? When we don’t pay attention, it too, will be lost into the unreality of the past. And the future? Best to look at how you live right now.

To truly be in the moment with mindful clarity, compassion and joy for other's well being … however it unfolds … is to lay aside your expectations as best as you are able. This may seem like an inconceivable challenge, but it can your beacon through the fog of life. Most importantly, it can inspire and orient you in how to live authentically engaged in the world.

The true substance of poetry lies not in the words themselves but in the thoughts they engender.

Pensive … a kind of cold fire
lacking the warmth of joy,
the summer sun,
or the taste of rain. .

Pensive … a kind of silence
slowly stirring
the chested holdings
of the heart.

Pensive … a kind of death,
with mind chatter in chains,
the winter sun breathing
mountains that won’t move.

The Embrace

become embrace and move mountains.
wear warmth like the wind …
never keep, never lose.

arrive unfettered and discover one taste.
yield to become full …
recognize, not make.

moving stillness without doing or haste.
forget the words or sounds …
speak, the unspoken.

With large, piercing round eyes, owls can see extraordinarily well in the dark. Something like seeing a mouse on a football field illuminated from the light of a single candle. Owls also have a highly developed auditory system and can hear prey from great distances. The owl’s nocturnal senses allow it to move with grace, ease and efficiency through the darkness. Perhaps the metaphor of an owl offering clarity and guidance to deeply see the unknown, is our navigating through the darkness to what really matters … seeing and listening without filtering, without illusion or deceit.
